Badami – A museum of rock cuts and rock cut architecture: Badami, 2015

Project Description Project Description

The increasing influx of tourists along with urbanization and expansion of Badami city will lead to an increasing load on its infrastructure giving rise to a number of issues which can be resolved with convivial design and planning interventions, but in doing so there are, amongst at least five fundamental issues that must be addressed:

  1. An intervention in the design and planning of state highway which is the arterial road cutting through the core area of the city resulting in traffic congestion and disrupted street life is necessary.
  2. An overall change in the road and streetscape is necessary to reactivate the existing local street and community life.
  3. The complex relationship between the existing farm lands, rocky mountainous surroundings of touristic value and future development needs to be addressed to enhance the Urban fabric of the city keeping in mind rejuvenation of natural resources and waste management.
  4. There is a need to connect the Natural Heritage with the people by increasing awareness and a need to enhance the overall exploration experience for locals and tourists.
  5. There is a need to address the existing socioeconomic situation of the city and to integrate it with the new development.

Concept

To Enhance, Expand and Connect are the three main guiding principles for the objectives of the proposal and follow from these initial percepts. Based on these principles can be understood as a series of three concentric zones radiating outwards from the Agasthya Lake.

To Enhance
The experience of Heritage exploration by reviving water bodies, green cover and ecosystem along the rock cut mountains and developing them as tourism gateways. The accessibility and livability of the city by proper intervention in its mobility network and street life thereby invariably activating the community life.

To Expand
The Green cover and Water bodies around the Rock Cut Mountains. To Regulate city growth with coherence with existing natural resources and heritage conservation.

To Connect
The people and Heritage with a more enriching experience by activating the commercial and hospitality of local character and thereby generating numerous job opportunities for locals.
